First Things First

Social media can be very intimating to the brave new soul who's decided to step forward and figure it all out.  With hundreds upon hundreds of different social bookmarking sites, social platforms and tools at the disposal of your fingertips, it can be very overwhelming to decide where to begin.  Do I set up a Facebook personal account?  Start Tweeting?  Build a community on Ning? Stream video on Qik? Do I blog?  Do I use Friendfeed?  And on and on and on. First things first.  Before you jump into the deep end of social media, first decide what your goals are.  Without direction, it's easy to get lost in all of the available options. Once you have one or two clear goals, then decide what tools are suited to best meet those goals.  Start small and with a clearly defined objective.  As Yogi Berra said, "If you don't know where you are going, you will wind up somewhere else." This applies to social media too.
