On Facebook: Just How Big is 500 Million?

In today’s Watch Me Wednesday video, Dave celebrates Facebook’s outstanding accomplishment of reaching 500 million users worldwide! Facebook has been around for about 5 years, but has grown phenomenally rapidly and continues to do so everyday. In honor of such an impossible number, Dave shares with us a little perspective on just how big 500 million really is. Here are a few statistics to try and wrap your head around: -500 million miles is 630 times around the planet earth -There are only 207 million distinct websites in the world, giving Facebook more then twice as many users as there are actual websites -500 million people could fill Yankee stadium for 9,500 games or 117 consecutive years, in which every game was sold out -In Apple’s history, they have sold 260 million iPods, which gives Facebook almost twice as many users as there are iPod owners. -The sun is 93 million miles away from earth, which means you could travel back and forth twice and barely make 400 million.

Then of course, there’s the most important stat: There are 7 billion people on this planet, and 1/14 of that population is now a Facebook user. Even more staggering is the fact that only 1.6 billion out of that 7 billion are internet users, so that gives Facebook nearly 1/3 of all people who use the internet worldwide. At this pace, Facebook should reach 1 billion users late next year!
