How You Can Deal With Bashtags On Twitter

In this week’s Watch Me Wednesday, I discuss a brand new social media term for promoted trends gone wrong—‘bashtags.’ Bashtags are created when promoted hashtags backfire on the promoter. Both McDonalds and Blackberry created promoted hashtags that were very quickly hijacked by Twitter followers. If you are going to spend the money on a hashtag campaign I have a few recommendations to keep in mind:

  • Think wisely about what your hashtag will be
  • Have a plan in case of a hijacking
  • Be responsive
