As Pinterest continues to grow (recently reaching 100 million monthly active members), both brands and consumers are flocking to the site. Consumers are looking for inspiration, and brands are eager to provide that inspiration in many ways — especially if it leads to increased sales. With new users exploring the site daily, here are some valuable tips and tricks you may not know for navigating Pinterest on a personal and professional level.

1. Find the Source (Personal/Professional)

To easily find the source of a pin, click on the “Visit Site” button. You can also try a Google image search. Google > Search by Image > Upload or Drag the Photo OR Paste the Image URL. The source link will typically show up as the top search result.

2. Search Smart (Personal/Professional)

After dedicating so much time pinning content, it should be easy to look back, right? Many users overlook the “Your Pins” feature in search. This is an easy way to find a recipe you found months ago or an article you meant to read.

3. Take Back Your Data (Personal/Professional)

Data is precious. When you find yourself running low, try clearing your recent Pinterest searches. Open the app, go to your profile > tap the gear icon > scroll down to Cached Data and tap Clear browsing history and Clear cache. It may not make a huge difference, but when you’re desperate for data, every little bit helps.

4. Hide Ads (Personal)

Compared to other social networks, Pinterest advertising is probably the most subtle. However, if you are seeing the same promoted pins over and over again, you can hover over the brand’s name (at the bottom) and click the “x” that appears next to “Hide this Pin.”

5. Pinterest Browser Extensions (Personal)

Pinterest offers browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari — which will add a “Pin It” button right to your browser’s toolbar. Once you have installed the extension, you will be able to right click, choose “Pin this Image” from the drop down and be able to choose the board to which you want to pin.
Bonus: If you already have the extension and want to remove the hovering “Pin It” button, here’s how: Right click the browser extension icon and go to Options. Next, select Hide hovering Pin It buttons.

6. Say No to Shortened Links (Professional)

When pins with shortened links are clicked on, Pinterest often issues a warning: “Suspicious Link: This link redirects to another site, it may link to spam or other inappropriate content.” Typically, you still have the option to click through, but this can defer people from visiting your link. Pinterest will also lower the search ranking of pins with URLs that are shortened. Save the link shortening for Twitter — on Pinterest it can be a critical mistake.

7. Who’s Pinning? (Professional)

Curious about who is pinning content directly from your website? Find out by simply pasting the URL below and adding your website name to the end.

8. Use a Cheat Sheet (Professional)

Aside from pins, there are various areas on Pinterest where imagery is required. Make sure these areas are optimized with this cheat sheet.
