Blogging Basics on Squarespace

Blogging is a great way for individuals and brands alike to create engaging long-form content to share on social media. It also helps improve your SEO.

While working with our blog at Likeable Media, I’ve learned a number of ways to improve our process, and how to efficiently use Squarespace. Here are a few of my tips for anyone interested in getting started or improving the process.

Schedule Your Posts

When you create fresh, consistent content that is important to your audience, you’ll be improving your SEO and generating regular assets to share on other channels. Plan out a schedule that is manageable for you.

To simplify your process, when you have a few posts ready, utilize the tools provided to schedule. This is a convenient and easy way to publish your blog and manage your time. I always double check each post after it is live to make sure everything looks correct. If there are any mistakes, you can go back in and fix them before sharing.

Alt Tags

Screen readers allow users to listen to content and are used by the blind and visually impaired. For your images to be read, it is important to include alt tags. An alt tag should describe what is seen on the image. Bonus: It also helps with SEO. When choosing images for your blog post, remember that if your images are directly related to your topic, your alt tags will also support your content.

Create alt tags in Squarespace by clicking on the image. First, choose “Caption Below,” and write your caption in the area provided. Remember: Your caption should accurately describe what is on the image. Next, change it to “Do Not Display Caption.”

Newsletter Block

Depending on your reasons for blogging, you might consider using the Newsletter block to create subscription lists. Depending on how often you’re posting, you could send a newsletter weekly or even monthly. Here is what the Newsletter Block looks like when editing your post.

If you track your newsletter, you can see click-through rates, indicating what content your subscribers want to see. Knowing what performs best in your newsletter can improve your overall strategy when brainstorming new ideas for the blog.

When using Squarespace, the newsletter block should be visible on each post. You can sync the Newsletter block to your Google Drive or MailChimp. I currently use Google Drive, and connect every Newsletter block to the same list for easy access.

Using Spacer Blocks to Resize Videos and Photos

A simple way to resize videos and images in Squarespace is to use Spacer blocks. You can shrink or stretch them, and the area they affect can be exclusive to your image or video. They can also affect the whole post. I like to use one spacer on both sides to keep everything centered. In the photo below, the dotted boxes indicate spacers.

Excerpts and Thumbnails

Under options, include a thumbnail for your post. Make sure each thumbnail is sized the same for consistency. If you upload an image that needs to be resized, it is possible to make the edits directly in Squarespace. I also use the same image at the top of the post which makes for a smooth reader experience. 

After you’ve chosen your thumbnail, create your preview text. This is done in the “Excerpt” area. What you choose to include here will show up as the preview to your blog, and is part of what you’ll see when the blog is shared on social media.

When you put together your thumbnail and excerpt, here is what it looks like on your blog feed.

If you are including authorship in the beginning of your post, I don’t recommend adding it at the top of your excerpt. When you share your article on social, it only allows for about one sentence, and it is important to utilize this as a preview to your content. 

Promotion

Once your blog is complete, share it on your social channels! Choose your network based on your audience and topic. Posts that are about a specific network typically do well when shared on that network; an article about tips for LinkedIn shared on LinkedIn may generate more traffic than the same article shared on Facebook. That being said, I find it useful to share each blog on all channels. If you publish often and have a lot of other content, you might want to stagger networks or selectively choose which blogs to highlight. You worked hard on your blog, now show it off.
