The Ultimate Cheat Sheet for Social Media Dimensions (Updated)

The social media space is constantly changing. Case in point: Since the last time we posted our cheat sheet almost seven months ago, Facebook has rolled out the single-column Timeline to brand pages, Vine now allows you to upload existing video not created in the app, and Twitter revamped its layout completely. You will see those changes (and more) reflected below in the updated version of our reference guide for the most frequently used dimensions.

Additional rules of thumb to keep in mind:


  • For shared images, horizontal (“landscape”) orientation is generally recommended, as it takes up more real estate in the News Feed. Square or vertical images will be scaled down and leave white space to the right of the image. However, in mobile, vertical (“portrait”) images are optimal.
  • The page name and category are overlayed onto the bottom of the cover photo. To keep this white text legible, it is optimal to make that area of the cover photo a darker color.


  • Many sources state that the recommended header image size is 1500 x 500. Our recommendation is to upload at a higher resolution for better viewing on larger screens.
  • While it is tempting to use a large amount of header image space to house useful information, it will be obstructed by the profile picture and bio in mobile. This is something to keep in mind if much of your audience will be viewing your Twitter page on mobile devices.


  • Since Tumblr is highly customizable, and with the variety of themes available, the way images appear on a Tumblr page will vary greatly. However, they will all be viewed at up to 500 px wide by 750 px high in the user’s dashboard.
