Today, Instagram’s food scene is bigger than ever — and with good reason.
Foodies still depend on other social media outlets to get the skinny on their favorite chef or hunt down new recipes, but there’s no better food pic fix than the app built for feasting your eyes on.
Instagram’s approachability works to create food celebrities without the traditional credentials of chefs, critics or restaurateurs. In some cases, even the kitchen becomes optional. Simply having one’s finger on the culinary pulse and keeping up with the ever-changing gastro scene is enough to get started on becoming a food influencer — although of course it also helps to have some discretionary income.
But professionals are watching what happens on Instagram, too. A recent episode of Bravo’s Top Chef featured an Instagram plating challenge that also revealed the identity of super-secret Instagrammer @chefjacqueslamerde. The episode garnered an extra 7,000 followers for the show’s account.
A great Instagram food account will not only earn lots of likes; it will inspire conversation. Here are five of our favorites:
Overview: Infatuation created the #EEEEEATS hashtag, posts originals along with regrams and has local accounts for city-specific posts. It most recently worked with Budweiser for sponsored content and Epicurious for an Instagram contest. It also does occasional feed takeovers.
Overview: This NYC-based college student isn’t as strong in the hashtag game, but her brightly colored feed features contests and brand partnerships while making you wonder how the bikini-clad gal in the profile picture keeps that figure!
Overview: A Norwegian food artist/photographer who creates adorable scenes and characters out of food. She also published a book on making healthy food fun, participates in lots of brand partnerships and giveaways and is very active on Pinterest along with Instagram.
Overview: Some great brand partnership opportunities were born out of this cereal and marshmallow-based account. Jessica Siskin, aka Mister_Krisp, has been able to leave her day job and operates a business based solely on these sticky treats.
Overview: By starting out with Yelp, Foodbabyny has made its internet presence virtually immortal by putting its pictures on restaurant reviews in addition to its Instagram account. This adorable New York City-based family eats out seemingly three times a day and makes sure to tag, hashtag and geotag everything it features, while also keeping its very cute brood in the frame! It has recently started doing feed takeovers and is also featuring mail-order food brands based outside NYC.
